THE NAMIBIAN FENCING FEDERATION

Activity/Progress Report for the year 2009

New Clubs:
Up to May 2009 the Windhoek Fencing Club was the only fencing club registered with the NFF.
After receiving numerous new applications another three clubs were founded and registered, namely:
Gobabis Fencing Club (Omaheke Region)
Fencing Club Katima (Caprivi Region)
Highlanders (Khomas Region)
Fencing facilities at Gobabis and Katima Mulilo are limited and the fencers of these regions frequently practice at the WFC until their facilities have been improved.
The highlanders and the WFC share the fencing hall in Windhoek, which is also the main venue for competitions ans training camps in the country.

Competitions:
Competitions are held regularly and are generally well attended by all fencers.
Due to limited funds, facilities, equipment and trainers, the only fencing discipline offered countrywide is Epee.
The following competitions were held:
-    WFC Club Ranking Competition on 18 April
-    Namibian National Fencing Competition on 20 June
-    National Ranking Competition on 19 September
-    and The Namibian Open Championship on 5 December

NFF Members and Fencers:
Up to date a total of 22 active fencers are registered with the NFF. Compared with 10 members at the end of 2008, this figure shows a drastic increase and interest in the sport seems to be increasing.

AGM:
An AGM was help on 11 August, which included the election of the committee, amendments to the constitution to accommodate for voting procedures for clubs from other regions and proposals for projects towards the development of the sport in Namibia.

Projects planned for 2010 and beyond:
The lease of the WFC and Highlanders fencing hall will expire by the end of 2010 and a new venue will have to be found by then. The NFF is planning to establish their own facility, but up to now funds for such a project could not be allocated and it remains the priority of the NFF to find sufficient funding as soon as possible to continue with the establishment of the new premises.
The NFF targets to organize two training camps in South Africa for 2010 and aims to hold a workshop in Northern Namibia in order to introduce the sport to the rural areas.
The main goal of the NFF is to establish a sound foundation for fencing in Namibia, make it a well recognized sport locally and especially introduce the youth of the country to this sport to secure its future and eventually produce promising fencers to represent Namibia abroad.

History of Fencing in Namibia
Fencing dates back to 1950 where the Windhoek Fencing Club was very active and took par even in South African Tournaments. But then for nearly 50 years Fencing was not existend in Namibia.
In 2006 Fencing was received through the help of Mr. Usmanov and his Foundation “For the Future of Fencing”.
Due to his generous help by providing basic equipment, fencing in Namibia alive again.
2007 the Namibian Fencing Federation was recognized by the F.I.E. and the Namibian National Olympic Committee. Because of his support and contribution, Namibian fencers could even attend Training lessons and Workshops at Mr. Usmanovs African training Center located at Dr. Gennady Tyshlers Fencing School, Johannesburg.
This resulted in a growing interest for fencing and the Namibian Fencing Federation is by now a respected and well recognized Federation.
December 2008 the acting President of the Federation represented Namibia at the World Conference held at Paris, France.
Because of the fast growing beginning January 2009 a second fencing Club, called Highlanders, was opened in Windhoek.
By June a Club was established at Katima Mulilo and gobabis.
The number of fencers increased to 40.
During 2009 regular competitions were held to provide a national ranking system.
